A COMPREHENSIVE SPORT PROGRAMME
Taking part in sports is crucial for young children as it builds physical health (strong bones, heart, fitness), boosts mental well-being (self-esteem, stress relief, focus), and teaches vital life skills (teamwork, leadership, resilience, discipline) through social interaction, helping them develop into well-rounded, healthy individuals and fostering a lifelong love for activity.

SPORT CODES
Athletics
Herbert Hurd Primary School offers the oppurtunity to compete in sprints, middle distancces, long jump, high jump and shot put.
The highlight is the annual Inter-House Athletics meeting, when all learners who wish to take part are given a day of exciting althletics to do so.
Swimming
Swimming is extremely competitive at Herberth Hurd Primary School. Freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly form the core of our competitive swimming galas.
Herbert Hurd Primary school has an indoor swimming-pool and offers swimming at school level, while club level swimming is alos offered at this prestigious school.
One of the key annual highlights is the Championship Gala, when when prestige swimmers get the oppotunity to compete for first, second and third place ribbons in each event.
Tennis
Herbert Hurd Primary School has various tennis teams. the learners play singles, doubles and mixed doubles. They compete in the local league.

Cricket
Herbert Hurd Primary School has various boys cricket teams in each age group. Young players are exposed to mini-cricket. Boys in the U/9 to U/13 age groups compete in the local league. Some of the teams played in the league semi-finals in 2025.

All coaches ensure that the following skills are developed properly:
batting (stance, footwork, shot selection), bowling (line, length, variations, action), and fielding (catching, ground skills, throwing), all built on crucial physical attributes like hand-eye coordination, balance, and fitness, plus vital mental aspects such as focus, strategy, and pressure handling.​

Hockey
Herbert Hurd Primary School has up to three boys and girls hockey teams in each age group. The school plays matches in the local league. The teams also play in Derby Days against schools from other towns and cities.

The coaches ensure that the folllowing skills are coached with precision:
moving the ball (dribbling/stickhandling), receiving (trapping), passing, tackling (defending), and shooting/goal scoring,
Rugby
Herbert Hurd Primary School offers rugby at U/7 to U/13 age group levels. They U/9 to U/13 boys compete regulary in local league games. Derby Days are also played against schools from other towns and cities.
All rugby coaches are extremely professional. The head coach of rugby, Mr S. Greyvenstein is not only an asture coach, but he also played rugby for the Free State Cheetahs and has much experience to share.

The coaches ensure that the following core skills are developed:
passing, tackling, running/evasion, kicking, and decision-making, supported by fundamental abilities like ball security, stability, fitness, and communication; mastering these allows players to move the ball, defend, create space, and make smart plays under pressure.
Squash
Herbert Hurd Primary School squash players are excited about the addition of squash to the sports programme.The players enjoy playing on Derby Days.

Core squash skills that are hoaned, involve mastering the grip, footwork, and key shots (drives, volleys, drops, boasts, lobs), supported by fitness like endurance, agility, and power, and focusing on efficient movement and a strong, stable core to link everything together for consistent play.
